Our friend Treacy O'Connor gifted us a most unique wedding present. She commissioned poet/bard Dave Rock to write a poem for us and to perform it at our wedding reception. Dave met myself and Susan briefly beforehand and interviewed us about each other. This then informed his words. It turned out that Dave was on a national tour called 'the sitting room bards' and our wedding ended up being part of this.
Check out the video and the written words below.

King and Queen of Our Own HeartBeats
For Susan and Ruairi, by Dave Rock, with endless love and admiration from Treacy.
For a world that sets fires on the places we would rest
to spur us on and wake us up,
makes single feathers spiral down
as reminders of our latent flight,
arranges green lights in radial patterns
opening around our search for rings,
that calls us with a yes,
I looked up/you looked up into sunfire
and when my head/your head came back down
I was/you were on your knees/my knees
asking the question that had been coming ever since
I said/you said yes
watched you stand/I stood in silhouette
motionless before the dive
into the ocean of our arriving life
of wild dreams
in service to the good we see
in feeding ourselves through all other mouths.
Two oak trees
each with their canopy
of glowing green masterpieces
crafted from soil, light, air,
returning to Earth over and over
to feed what wants to grow.
Two oaks, roots touching underground,
pulling up the same life.
giving same green breath back.
Susan, for arriving with such strength of music
already inside you. For being strong and free
enough to want to me, and want me strong and free.
For embodying the generosity of beauty
in our home, your heart, your body.
For the hand of friendship and the hand of love,
Ruairi, for taking every step along the way
to become the man you are and are becoming;
Kindest, most honourable, most fated I have known.
For allowing me to be too good to be true.
For calling out the music from my roots,
World, for starting fires, for opening
green circles of light along our way,
calling us to feed you and through you
ourselves. Sending singular reminders
of ever waiting flight,
wild with need to take us
where we would go and never go.
For giving us good humanity to work with and for.
Strong truth to believe in.
A meaning to our marriage beyond one man, one woman
in love, and a whole land promising to promise itself
to itself over and over,
as long as life begins,
If you believe the courage of love deserves return
return it now with the light from your eyes.
If you believe this king, this queen
of their own heartbeats and nothing else,
deserve your blessing, bless them now
with the silence of your own beating hearts.
To Love is Not to Possess
To love is not to possess,
To own or imprison,
Nor to lose one's self in another.
Love is to join and separate,
To walk alone and together,
To find a laughing freedom
That lonely isolation does not permit.
It is finally to be able
To be who we really are
No longer clinging in childish dependency
Nor docilely living separate lives in silence,
It is to be perfectly one's self
And perfectly joined in permanent commitment
To another--and to one's inner self.
Love only endures when it moves like waves,
Receding and returning gently or passionately,
Or moving lovingly like the tide
In the moon's own predictable harmony,
Because finally, despite a child's scars
Or an adult's deepest wounds,
They are openly free to be
Who they really are--and always secretly were,
In the very core of their being
Where true and lasting love can alone abide.
